Mentoring Versus Counseling

The difference between counseling and mentoring is vast. Giving someone advice or allowing them to make the right decision in their lives, is the purpose of counseling. Counselilng of many different types is available on all levels. People who counsel other people for a living are well versed in dealing with problems encountered by various individuals, and they have degrees in this field.

Mentoring is very different. Anyone can be a mentor. A mentor paves the way for a person to become like them. Mentoring is usually mentioned when it comes to careers, but it can be used for just about anything. A mentor is a role model that someone aspires to emulate.

You do not need to have a counseling degree to be a mentor. Mentoring can be done by anyone who wants to take the time to give a positive role model to others. You can choose to mentor people at work or in a personal setting. There are organizations that allow you to mentor young people who really need a role model. There are also mentoring associations for career minded individuals.

If you have reached a point in your life where you are successful in a certain field, you may feel like you want to give something back to others who have not yet reached the zenith of their aspirations. You can easily do this by mentoring others in the area in which you have succeeded.

In addition to mentoring someone else, you can also use a mentor who has achieved something that you wish to achieve. Your mentor will give you tips and strategies that you can use to reach your goals. You, in turn, can then do the same for someone else.

Mentoring is not always a formal activity. In some cases, people do not even realize that they are mentoring someone else or even being mentored. Have you ever asked for help from someone who has reached goals that you hope to reach? If so, this is mentoring. You may be mentoring without even realizing it.

Consider being a mentor if you have something to offer others who can benefit from your knowledge. Consider getting a mentor if you are seeking knowledge from someone who has achieved success in an area in which you hope to succeed.

If you enjoy working with young people, you can be a mentor for young people who need a role model for both career as well as their personal life. Everyone has a gift for something that they can share with others. Mentoring others who want to partake of your gift can be the way to pay back to the world for everything that you have. Even if you are mentoring someone on a social level, they can benefit from your wisdom.

Counseling is different from mentoring. Mentoring is using your achievements to give others a chance to achieve similar goals. Perhaps someone, along the course of your life, helped you. A good way to pay them back would be the mentoring of others.
